The Flat

Introduction

Welcome to The Red Flat, an interactive museum-like experience dedicated to Bulgaria’s communist past. Step into the shoes of an ordinary Bulgarian family from the 1980s and explore what life was like during the last decade of socialism in Bulgaria. Located in the heart of Sofia, The Red Flat is a window into the daily routines, challenges, and memories of a world long gone.

Our Inspiration

The Red Flat is inspired by the personal stories of people who lived through the socialist era. We wanted to create an authentic and intimate space that captures the essence of life in Bulgaria during this period. Every item, every room in the flat tells a story, helping visitors understand the cultural and historical context of a time when life was simple, yet full of unique complexities.

What to expect

Entering the Red Flat means travelling back in time to Communist Bulgaria of the 1980’s. By visiting the home of an average family, you will discover what everyday life was like for ordinary Bulgarians during the Cold War. Work and leisure, school and vacation, eating, drinking, watching TV, partying, and doing the chores – how did these things happen in the days of Reagan and Gorbachev? Enter the flat and find out for yourselves!

INTERACTIVE EXPERIENCE

Unlike traditional museums, The Red Flat encourages you to engage with the space in a hands-on way. Open drawers, flip through magazines, listen to the radio, and even smell the spices in the kitchen! Through this immersive experience, we aim to bring history to life, allowing visitors to connect emotionally with the past in a way that goes beyond simply observing.
